ROFL! Daughter on National TV: Yes or No?

Oh, jeez. D14 called me this afternoon.
In her words: "Well, Mom, a couple of months ago when I was still in The Depression [she calls it The Depression the way Bush used to call it The Google...], I wrote in to Tyra Banks when they were looking for kids of divorced parents..."

Oh lordy.
Apparently, an associate producer called back today to talk with her. D14 gave me the number; I called and left a voicemail.

I told D14 that:
- XNH's approval would be needed, and might not be likely
- to think about how being on television might affect XNH's job, especially if there are parents in his district who would approve of such things.
- think about how she would feel talking about personal issues to a national audience.
- it was healthy that she vented, told me about it, and that sometimes it's reassuring for people to know they're not the only one going through something alone.
- think about how her grandparents might feel, hearing her talk about very personal things on TV.
- she would not be able to control what they ask her, and she might have to talk about some very painful things.

As much as it would tickle me just to even ASK the XNH about it and see his response (one of her issues, according to her essay, was his online-romance-soon-to-be-wedding), I'm not sure that it's a great idea.

Anyway.
Would you say "Yes" or "No"?

Good advice.  I love the idea of children speaking OUT but who knows what would be asked of her and how intrusive it may become. And about N...haha!  I'd love to see that kodak moment, too.

I had to think about this for awhile. The good thing is that your daughter empowered herself and made a choice to talk about her experience. The bad thing is that your daughter empowered herself and made the choice to talk about her experience.

I'm not so sure about asking her to consider her father's feelings. She's likely done that all her life---putting him ahead of herself, if ya know what i mean. I'd love to see more children talking about the impact of parental infidelities (self-centered behavior) if only to educate the public about the traumatic effect this has on our children. So I say, "Let her go for it."

That's because I know you're a responsible mother who will find out exactly what questions they'll be asking, how your daughter will be treated, and whether or not producers can mask her identity. How about one of those 'shadow' confessions to protect her from public criticism? I'd be willing to donate some big-eyed glasses with a mustache glued on the frame.

Like CZ, I had to think about this one.  But basically I agree with her.  Our children are the ones who probably will suffer more than we have having grown up with a person/father who could not love them or bond with them.  I know how MY grown children are feeling the affects of that now, and it isn't pretty and it makes me very sad.  My daughters are beautiful, smart, funny, and pretty much resolved to NEVER getting married.  They are also cynical and have not much use for men in their lives. 

So I say it is time our children began to take back their power by speaking out about the impact adultery and divorce AND a narcissistic, selfish parent has had on them.  It is also time for your daughter to begin to claim her own feelings and not worry about hurting poor widdle Daddy's widdle feelings (as CZ so funnily puts it).  He is a big person, he made his own choices,and if he doesn't like the impact it had on his daughter, then he could have made better choices, couldn't he???

Empower her to speak, Muse, if that is how she feels.  It is not about truth here, it is about HER FEELINGS.  I also say let her go for it.
