The lawyer for the so-called Montreal North Rapist says his young client is just a misunderstood narcissist who needs help and shouldn't be declared a long term offender and monitored for several years after his sentence is up.
The defence brought in its own expert witness, a clinical sexual psychologist, who testified that the 20-year-old was marked by several incidents in his young life, including being dumped by his first two girlfriends, something his ego couldn't take.
The witness says the young man's narcissistic personality influenced his behaviour, prompting him to prey on women: raping and molesting nine of them in Montreal North between November 2005 and October 2006 as a way of vengeance and retaking power. He was 16 at the time.
The defence witness went on to say that the young man doesn't have violent tendencies and doesn't have problems with alcohol or drugs, but rather has a "nonchalant attitude."
His lawyer Stephen Angers says long term offender status isn't the right way to help him.
"He's going to be within the system for the next ten years. Why add another ten years to that? To us, that is just too much, " says Angers, who adds that his client is ready to work within the system to get the help he needs.
The crown wants him declared a long term offender, under surveillance for 7 to 10 years after he gets out of prison.
The sentencing hearing continues.
