Lab Technician Suspect Described as Arrogant Control Freak
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:14:35 AM »
The lab tech arrested in the Yale murder case has been described as an arrogant control freak who had issues about the cleanliness in the lab.  They are calling the case one of violence, which indicates rage, however the whole story has not been released.

The victim was choked to death in some manner.  OMG!

yes i thought about narcissism and this story
but apparently they are not linked romantically
it's a case of work colleague violence and control
still sounds alot like a narc tho
scary how these stories are becoming more frequent

taking,

Sociopaths (the extreme Ns) can do stuff like this to anyone, anytime. I bet that there was something about this female scientist that challenged his illusion of grandiosity more than the other people who worked in the lab. Maybe she refused to listen to his control-freak diatribe about messy mouse cages (his job was to clean them). Anyway he asked her for an appt to discuss the messy cages.........At least the media is not reporting this as a PETA murder.

I keep thinking that if the media would cover these cases as N cases and S/P cases, then people would eventually begin to educate themselves and recognize grandiosity as dangerous. If we recognized grandiosity as a hallmark of disease, society could slowly, eventually start to shift value towards modesty (like in Asia) and perhaps many fewer girls would get involved with Ns, and the S/Ps would be so much easier to spot being so extreme!.

It would be informative, Julia, to discuss grandiosity as a result of earning aclaim through effort, and grandiosity that is a result of puffed up self-esteem handed to a person, or self assigned in an effort to feel better.   I witnessed countless examples of fake self-esteem in the public school while tutoring special ed students, and I refused to play the game, unless my uneducated supervisor required it.  I could give many examples.  The supervisor was not certified for her position, nor was she is school to earn certification.   My cohort and I called it "pretend school."

On the other hand, I have always been an admirer of people like Martina Navatralova who earned much aclaim in her career as a result of hard work and aggressive competition, dedication to the cause, and all.  She really deserves grandiosity so it doesn't bother me at all if she gets in free and gets the best seat once in a while, so to speak.

One is pathological after a period of time, which is the case with my husband.  He won a few contests early in life, and used that to propel himself in the world with no further education in what he was doing.   It is only now that I realize how much he faked his careers on the backs of others, taking the credit when it was due to the children's hard work in the business.  I saw to it that they had education to propel themselves, to the degree that they could, given their father's control of everything business and personal in our lives.

I can easily imagine that this young technician imagined that no one could possibly do as well cleaning cages as he could, whether or not it was a fact in this case.  Envy and jealousy is the basis of most evil, according to many writers on the subject of narcissism.   So we are in territory that we can understand and educate ourselves.

Current news stories and videos:

 Annie Le

A video by CBS titled "Motive in Yale Murder" is included on the link above

From CollegeNews.com:

Raymond Clark III arrested for Yale student murder

Raymond Clark III was taken into police custody Thursday morning, as New Haven police chief describes case as "workplace murder"

Jon Graef

Raymond Clark III, a lab technician who worked in the medical lab building on Yale University where student Annie Le was found Sunday, was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with murder, according to the New York Times, who also reported that Clark III was brought into police custody at 8:30 EST.

Bond was set at $3 million dollars for Clark, who is expected to be arraigned in the next day. New Haven Police Chief James Lewis told the New Haven Register that the murder of Annie Le can be described as “workplace violence."

Initially a person of interest in the death of Annie Le, Raymond Clark III aroused police suspicion when they noticed scratches on Clark’s chest, as well as when he failed a polygraph test. Afterward, Clark then retained an attorney, and ceased to answer any additional questions, according to CNN.  On Tuesday, Raymond Clark III was served two warrants. One warrant was to search his home, and the other was in order to obtain DNA samples.

Clark was initially released by police for co-operating with them in providing the samples.

Le reportedly died of “traumatic asphyxiation due to neck compression,” according to the New Haven Register. Traumatic asphyxiation can be caused by a quick increase in pressure to the throat or upper abdomen.

Le had gone missing on Sept. 8th, and was last seen by surveillance cameras at the Amistad building, a medical lab facility on the Yale University campus. Her body was then found in the wall of a building on Sept. 13th, the day she was to be married to a Columbia University graduate student.

Apparently, Raymond Clark III has a history of violence against women. The New York Post reported that an ex-girlfriend of Clark’s accused him of forcing to have sex with her in a 2003 police report. The ex wrote on her Facebook page that she was “shocked” when she heard of Clark’s being a person of interest in the Annie Le case, according to the Post.

On Thursday, Yale University president Richard C. Levin released a statement about Clark’s arrest, saying “We are relieved and encouraged by this progress in the investigation, but, of course, we must resist the temptation to rush to judgment until a full and fair prosecution of this case brings a just resolution.”

“As with every development in this tragic story, we think first of Annie’s family, her fiancé and his family, and her friends, and our hearts go out to them.”

Levin also said in the statement that Clark had been a technician with the university since 2004, and that a supervisor report about him said that “nothing in the history of his employment at the University gave an indication that his involvement in such a crime might be possible.”

Our Take

Indeed, as with every development with the Annie Le case, one must keep their thoughts with the loved ones who are profoundly suffering. However, as Levin is careful to note in his statement, any judgment and prosecution of Clark must be “full and fair.” Based on what the papers are reporting about the New Haven police, Clark will receive a fair trial. As Yale President Levin notes in his statement, the “FBI, Connecticut State Police, New Haven Police, Yale Police, and Yale Security...have worked tirelessly and cooperatively since Annie’s disappearance last Tuesday.”

Based on what’s been reported, all authorities in the case have proceeded with the utmost caution. Hopefully, their efforts will result in impartial justice being merited out. It’s the least that all parties close to the case deserve.

As always, College News extends its condolences to the Annie Le family, her friends and her fiance.

Once again;

The scope of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Some people with NPD present themselves as obliviously arrogant, boastful, attention seeking, and entitled, and they bluntly and even proudly verify their narcissistic characteristics. Other may pride themselves on being modest and secretly but consciously hide their narcissistic strivings, or they may, due to shame and insecurity, deny any tendencies of feeling special or superior or of having serious interpersonal problems. Because they appear sensitive, compliant, timid and suffering from feelings of inferiority, an extended psychodiagnostic evaluation or a longer period of psychotherapy may be required to establish a correct diagnosis.

Still other narcissistic people who present closer to the psychopathy range are ruthlessly insensitive and entitledly exploitative, charming and cunning with manipulative and sadistic behaviour. In addition, of diagnostic and clinical importance is the fact that people who initially may present strikingly overt narcissistic features can paradoxically have less severe narcissistic pathology and be capable of both empathy and interpersonal commitments. Others who appear concerned and interpersonally ‘tuned in’ can have a much more severe hidden underlying narcissistic pathology, being cunning, envious, spiteful, contemptuous, revengeful, and incapable of mutual interpersonal relationships.

In sum, there are significant ambiguities in differentiating narcissistic traits from the enduring NPD, and in the absence of relevant definitions and cutoff points for NPD, the use of these terms is relatively arbitrary. In other words, people can have specific areas of severely disordered narcissism without meeting the official criteria. None of the present diagnostic systems or instruments takes into account these diagnostic challenges.
