O/T but urgent...

I haven't actually gotten into PA school yet. I'm training for my CNA and will work (hopefully) in a hospital for a year or so before I start thinking about applying to schools. I've gotten encouragement from my son's doctors and nurses, my husband's family and all of our friends... basically every except for my Nparents to do this and it has been a long time coming. I started wanting to be a doctor when I was 8 years old or so, but when I was 12, the Nparents decided to knock me down a peg and had me sit down with one of their burned-out doctor friends who told me I didn't want to go to med school. My parents then proceeded to throw every excuse in the book at me as to why I couldn't do it. "Your body can't handle it. There's too many long hours. You won't be able to have a family. You can't handle the studying. Being a doctor isn't an attractive profession any more."

I really think it all boils down to the fact that my Nstepfather didn't want someone in the family to be called Dr. because he couldn't. He was 20 hours of classes shy of getting his doctorate in geophysics when he had a falling out with a professor and wrote the whole university off and has been badmouthing everything about the university that he can ever since.

You're probably right on about that. I know what it's like. My Nmom absolutely can't stand that I went back to school. At family get togethers, by brothers always ask me how it's going, congratulate me for making the Dean's list, ask me about my current classes.

My mom won't ever ask me, when I bring it up, which I do purposely to get to her (bad I know) I most get a "good for you" and she changes the subject quickly. Because it makes her feel bad about herself.

I really is just sickening, how our very own parents can't be happy for us, encourage us, want for us to succeed at something. I just simply can't imagine to that to my own daughter.

I hope my daughter accomplishes more than I could ever dream of. I hope she passes me by 100 miles in success and accomplishments. I'll be right there cheering her on every step of the way.

Glad to hear your son is on the mend now .   
About the putting down >>> same happened to me with my parents .Also with my STBXNH ,i went back to college and

 all he created was drama after drama like walking out of jobs /.so we lost our home etc .My eldest son tried to commit suicide 2 ,and ended up in mental hospital ,i wasback and forwards at college /mental hospital visits ,and had 2 young

children too youngest was 2yrs old .
When i got the certificates passing with distinctions  ,my NH said "so they are only bits of paper " ???

I was worn out and ended up being admitted to hospital nearly dying  with my asthma etc ,he didnt care at all .

so congratulations for  trying  to better yourself ,i know how hard it can be for us to do this .

  for you Healing Daughter. That must all have been horrible unbearable stress.

There is nothing like home when you have been through the mill like that.

Also REALLY glad to hear you have the determination back to follow your ambitions despite your NFOO trying to stomp all over them.
